A History of the Brebbia Brand

Brebbia was founded dually by Enea Buzzi and Achille Savinelli in 1947 specifically to supply the Savinelli shop in Milan. Their goal was to produce high quality pipes for a reasonable price, which, given the low level of pipe quality predominant in Italy at the time, was fairly revolutionary. They crafted their pipes under the Savinelli name to profit from the already widely recognized brand.

Buzzi was in charge of pipe production and Savinelli was in charge of sales. Buzzi resided near the factory which was located in an old, renovated power station owned by his grandfather. Savinelli remained in Milan throughout the early years of Brebbia. Not surprisingly, their arrangement didn't last too long and Savinelli started his own factory in 1953 in Barasso, just like from Brebbia (where the original Savinelli factory remained, now owned entirely by Buzzi). Buzzi continued to make pipes under the Savinelli name and also made a few pieces under his trade name, MPB or Manufacture Pipe Brebbia.

By 1956, Buzzi bought out Savinelli's shares in the factory and began making exclusively under the brand MPB. At first, MPB was having trouble differentiating its style from that of Savinelli in particular and other makers in north Italy in general. Ultimately, Brebbia found its niche by creating predominantly classical shapes with an elegant or stylish flair.

In 1968, the trademark was switched to the current gold outline horizontal diamond and in 1976 the name was officially changed from MPB to Pipe Brebbia.

Luciano Brebbia now administers the factory and the brand's distribution. Brebbia continues to produce excellent pipes at a very reasonable price. Their emphasis on classical and moderately neoclassical shapes combined with an Italian flair for design has kept them at the forefront of Italian pipe manufacturers. They rely on high quality Mediterranean briar, but from no specific locale. The briar is air cured in the traditional Italian fashion.

Today, the factory of fourteen produces approximately 35,000 pipes per year for sale in countries throughout the world, though a very large percentage of their annual production goes to Germany.
